UK’s Vision for ai in Development: Collaboration and Innovation at UNGA
The United Kingdom is advocating for the potential of artificial intelligence (ai) to accelerate development in the world’s most impoverished nations during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Collaboration and Coordination for ai in Development
Foreign Secretary James Cleverly presented the UK’s vision, urging international partners to collaborate and coordinate their efforts in utilizing ai for development, particularly in Africa, and making progress towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
ai for Development Program
To support this initiative, the UK is launching the ‘ai for Development’ program in partnership with Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The primary goal of this collaboration is to help developing countries, mainly in Africa, build local ai capabilities and foster innovation.
Exploring the Role of ai in Sustainable Development
The announcement coincides with a high-level event on ai, co-convened by the UK during the UNGA margins. This session, chaired by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, brings together governments, tech companies, and NGOs to discuss how ai can contribute to the SDGs’ achievement.
Preventing Crises with ai: The Complex Risk Analytics Fund
The UK is also committing £1 million to the Complex Risk Analytics Fund (CRAF), an international partnership that uses ai to prevent crises and support countries in their recovery towards sustainable development.

IDRC President Julie Delahanty expressed her satisfaction with the partnership between IDRC and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). “IDRC is pleased to collaborate with FCDO, a key ally in tackling the most pressing development challenges,” she said.
UK’s Broader Commitment to ai and Sustainable Development
This announcement reinforces the UK’s broader commitment to using ai innovation to address global challenges, including the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals.
ai Safety Summit at Bletchley Park
Additionally, the UK will host an ai safety summit in 2023 at historic Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire to garner international consensus on the urgent need for safety measures in cutting-edge ai technology.
